Summer Int. Plus Conversation

Advanced Plus

Tuesdays 6:30 - 8:00pm | Tuesdays 7:30 - 8:30pm | Thursdays 6:30 - 7:30pm

This course is for adults who have completed Advanced 4 or an equivalent level. Advanced Plus will focus on increasing students’ ability to narrate a range of topics in connected, sustained discourse. Students will also continue to improve abilities in reading comprehension and composition in Chinese characters.

Summer Beginner

Not offered this term

This course is for adults with little or no prior experience with Mandarin Chinese. After completing this course, students will be prepared to advance to Beginner 2. During Summer Beginner, students will learn to:

  • Read and write Pinyin (Chinese romanization system)
  • Count 0-100
  • Ask and answer questions related to date and time
  • Discuss the weather
  • Greet others
  • Perform a detailed self introduction
  • Introduce others
  • Ask and answer questions about their name, nationality, where they live and work and their hobbies.

Summer Advanced Conversation

This advanced-level conversation course will focus on expanding speaking and listening skills in a variety of practical contexts, increasing vocabulary and strengthening command of a wider range of grammatical constructions.

Beginner 1

Not offered this term

After completing this course, students will be prepared to advance to Beginner 3. During Beginner 2, students will learn to:

  • Ask and answer questions about various learned skills, such as speaking Mandarin
  • Discuss the length of time they have been doing a certain activity
  • Ask and answer “why” questions
  • Discuss experiences like traveling to China, eating particular food, etc.
  • Ask for and give directions
  • Discuss food and order in a restaurant
  • Shop and bargain

Beginner 3

This course is for adults who have completed Beginner 2 or an equivalent level. Beginner 3 will focus on developing conversational skills, providing students with the language necessary to engage in more complicated and meaningful interactions. After completing this course, students will be prepared to advance to Beginner 4. During Beginner 3, students will learn to:

  • Discuss their daily routines
  • Ask and answer questions about preferences
  • Describe physical features and personal attributes
  • Ask and answer detailed questions about past and future events
  • Discuss travel plans

Beginner 4

Not offered this term

This course is for adults who have completed Beginner 3 or an equivalent level. Beginner 4 will focus on developing reading comprehension skills and further improve conversational skills. After completing this course, students will be prepared to advance to Intermediate 1. During Beginner 4, students will learn to:

  • Read and discuss short Chinese texts

Intermediate 1

Not offered this term

This course is for adults who have completed Beginner 4 or an equivalent level. Intermediate 1 will focus on improving conversational skills and reading of basic Chinese characters (Simplified). Students will begin to read conversations and short texts solely in characters. After completing this course, students will be prepared to advance to Intermediate 2. During Intermediate 1, students will:

  • Continue to develop conversational skills
  • Read and discuss long Chinese texts
  • Begin to write commonly used characters

Intermediate 2

This course is for adults who have completed Intermediate 1 or an equivalent level. Intermediate 2 will focus on improving reading comprehension and conversation skills. After completing this course, students will be prepared to advance to Intermediate 3.

Intermediate 3
